Barrels are built up of individual parts called staves. In order to learn more about Vasa’s barrels, we have taken samples, cross-sections, from some of these staves. These three sections are of oak and come from one of Vasa’s powder kegs. Dendrochronological analysis has been undertaken on them.
Dendrochronology is a method used to date and sometimes also to determine the provenance of the wood by examining the annual growth rings. The analysis shows that the timber for the staves grew in the region around Lübeck, some time between 1420 and 1614.
